FBI Concerned Alleged Chinese Agent Is Flight Risk, Seeks Pre-Trial Detention

Federal prosecutors revealed that the FBI is concerned an alleged Chinese agent charged with stealing trade secrets poses a serious flight risk, citing evidence of foreign connections and financial ties.
The case, filed in federal court in Manhattan, charges Wanying Zhang with economic espionage related to semiconductor technology acquired from a U.S. company. Prosecutors argued in court filings that Zhang has extensive family and financial ties to China and has already accessed a one-way flight booking to Beijing.
The FBI's concern echoes earlier cases involving foreign nationals accused of technology transfer violations. The defense has denied all charges, calling the prosecution a case of mistaken identity. A bail hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
This case arrives at a time of heightened scrutiny over Chinese investment in U.S. technology and ongoing diplomatic tensions over trade and national security. The Department of Justice has brought more than 50 economic espionage cases since 2018, most involving allegations of Chinese state-backed theft of intellectual property.
